Starbucks History

Have you ever wonder who founded Starbucks? The first Starbucks was opened in in Seattle, Washington, in 1971 by: Jerry Baldwin, Zev Siegel, and Gordon Bowker. The three men were inspired by Alfred Peet to sell high-quality coffee beans and equipment. From 1971–1976, that first Starbucks was located at 2000 Western Avenue; it then was relocated to 1912 Pike Place, where it still remains today.

During their first year of operation, they purchased coffee beans from Peet’s, then began buying directly from growers. Howard Schultz joined the company in 1982 as their Director of Marketing, and after a trip to Milan, Italy suggested that the company sell coffee and espresso drinks ain addition to beans. The owners originally rejected this idea, believing that getting into the beverage business would distract the company from its primary focus.

Certain that there was money to be made selling pre-made drinks, Schultz started the Il Giornale coffee bar chain in 1985. In 1984, the original owners of Starbucks, led by Baldwin, took the opportunity to purchase Peet’s.

You can visit the Starbucks Menu to see Starbucks coffee company line up of beverages including brewed coffees, iced or hot espresso, frappuchinos, tea, Double Shots and Vivianno smoothies as well as Starbucks nutritional information and facts.
